The moment we had long been waiting for had arrived. Our three-month Volunteer Program with Cultural Destination Nepal (CDN) officially started. From April 6th through April 16th, we will be staying with a host family and working our way through a cultural immersion orientation program. I remember distinctly sitting on the soft carpet in front of a roaring fire over a year ago in our old Thousand Oaks, CA rental house, pouring over a book called Volunteer Vacations, searching for just the right program and location. Pokhara Biking and the Mountain Museum

The day was but young and Pokhara had so much more to offer. On this our last day, we found a burst of energy to get the most out of the hours. We had so much fun bicycling around Cambodia and Vietnam that we decided to rent bikes and take our own self-guided tour of areas not reachable by foot. We shopped around and found a good deal on some old bicycles at a little shop off the street. Continue reading

Sarangkot and the Himalayan Mountains

Where are we supposed to be looking? Do you see them yet? Are we high enough? No, I think we should go higher. Kendall and I were quickly getting woken from our early-morning grogginess in the brisk mountain air and trying to come up with a plan. The driver, not really a big talker, dropped us off partway up to Sarangkot with little hint as to where to go. Everyone says this is the place to best view the massive Himalayan peaks that surround Pokhara when not actually partaking in a trek through the Annapurnas. So here we were, on a steep hillside, unsure if we had walked high enough to get a solid view. It was quite apparent that our window of opportunity was going to be short, so we wanted to settle in somewhere and enjoy the sunrise. Continue reading
